  I wonder how many folks would produce original work if copyright didn’t exist to prevent them from profiting off of fanfic and other derivative works…

  to be fair, I wonder how much fanfic especially has been prevented by copyright. I mean, even big, protective franchises like Harry Potter have fanfic — they seem to be okay with non-commercial derivatives (as long as it’s only the settings and characters, I haven’t seen a remix of it yet)
